Rabies has been present in Labrador Retriever for as long as we can remember. It is a viral disease affecting warm-blooded animals that can be transmitted to humans. So if unfortunately you are bitten by a Labrador Retriever or any breed of dog, then there is a possibility of having rabies. The virus is derived from the saliva of an infected animal and then transmitted through close contact with saliva of infected animals, such as bites, scratches, licks on broken skin and mucous membranes.

When should dogs be vaccinated ?
Dogs should be vaccinated for the first time when they are young puppies (from 9 weeks of age - and occasionally earlier) to protect them against a number of important infectious diseases. They usually require more than one dose initially (called the primary course) followed by booster vaccinations at regular intervals to maintain protection.

National programmes for the control of rabies in dogs:
Canine rabies can be eliminated, as has been demonstrated in North America, western Europe, Japan and many areas in South America. During the last two decades, a significant reduction in human rabies associated with dog rabies has been achieved in Mexico, South America and the Caribbean by the programme for the elimination of canine rabies initiated and coordinated by the Pan American Health Organization/WHO Regional Office for the Americas. In contrast, over the past two decades rabies has been increasing in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, attributed to rapidly growing dog populations and increasing urbanization, density and mobility of human populations. However, canine rabies is still widespread, occurring in over 80 countries and territories, which are predominantly in the developing world. In more than 99% of all human rabies cases, the virus is transmitted from dogs; half of the global human population lives in canine rabies-endemic areas and is considered at risk of contracting rabies.

Dog rabies control
More than 3 billion people, about half the world’s population, are living in countries/territories where dog rabies still exists and are potentially exposed to rabies. It is estimated that at least 55 000 human rabies deaths occur yearly in Africa and Asia following contact with rabid dogs.

Facts
Rabies is one of the best known of all the viruses. The mere mention of the disease can bring back vivid memories of Old Yeller. Who among us does not picture a large yellow dog foaming at the mouth and acting aggressively and out of its mind looking to bite anyone or thing that crosses its path. While this is a common stereotype, this is actually a rarely seen scenario, in the United States that is. Fortunately, through active vaccination and eradication programs, rabies only accounted for 4 human deaths in the United States in 1997. In other parts of the world, however, human cases and deaths from rabies are much higher. In fact, some estimates claim that human death rates may be over 10,000 a year in southern Asia.
